New York City Barefoot Run Report

I'm on a flight back from New York City and a wonderful weekend enjoying all things barefoot. Ever since I learned about the first event last year, I patiently awaited the sequel and the opportunity to attend and meet other barefoot enthusiasts and key figures in the movement.

Thanks to a great team of volunteers and Maggie and John Durant, the weekend was a masterpiece of execution. Somehow they even managed to arrange for perfect weather in spite of forecasts predicting the worst. The official events kicked off on Friday morning with barefoot clinics conducted by various Kudus, great barefoot teachers like Barefoot Ken Bob, Jason Robillard, Michael Sandler, and others. The day was capped off with the Merrell sponsored party where we got hear from and interact with the experts in a series of talks while enjoying and endless supply of beer and wine provided by sponsors. The highlight of the evening for me was the chance to speak with each of the Kudus and have them autograph a picture of our running crew back home.

Sunday morning was the big event -- the barefoot run. Inspired by the talks the night before, I shed my usual huaraches and went all the way running a little over six miles, three times around Governor's Island. Running alongside and chatting with Christopher McDougall and Barefoot Ken Bob will be experiences never forgotten. I hope to attend next year with my wife accompanying me. I'm sure it will be even bigger and even better as more people discover the benefits of barefoot running.
